Peters Township qualifies all five female golfers
Peters Township dominated the links as all five of its female golfers qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA championships.
At the sectional qualifier played Sept. 20 at Chippewa Golf Club in Bentleyville, Ellie Benson and Brooke Vowcheck tied for medalist honors. Both carded 3-over par 73s on the 5,140-yard course.
Sophia Severns followed in fourth place with an 80 while her sister, Amelia, tied for eighth place with an 86. In between, Gabby Catalogna scored an 85 to tie for sixth place with Mt. Lebanon’s Madeline Zerega.
Upper St. Clair advanced three golfers.
Addy Shedd finished fifth with an 84. Olivia Ziegler tied for eighth place (86) and Myla Burchill tied for 10th place and carded an 88, just under the target score of 89.
Other area participants in the sectional included: Liz DeLo and Evie Sullivan from USC; Lebo’s Anna Kushnir, Tess Kanche, Athena Renton and Gillian Mitchell; Ally Wolling, Kaylee Kreigline and Sarah Jakel from Bethel Park and South Fayette’s Cesa Pusateri, Rylie Mendenhall, Cella Pusateri and Natalie Fittipaldo.
The WPIAL girls’ championships commence with first-round action Sept. 26 at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley. The second and final round will be played Oct. 4.
The WPIAL Class AAA boys’ first-round action will be held Sept. 25 at the Latrobe Country Club. The final round will be contested Oct. 2 at Valleybrook Country Club.
PT soccer
In a battle beaten unbeaten girls’ soccer teams, Peters Township edged Upper St. Clair, 1-0.
Molly Kubistek turned back a barrage of Panther shots on goal and the Indian defense protected the goal advantage created in the first half when Julia Spergel scored off an assist from Camryn Klein.
With the win, PT improved to 7-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in Section 2, 4A.
With the loss, USC fell to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Meanwhile, the Petes Township men’s soccer team blanked Hempfield, 6-0.
Blake Gablehart, Brett Martin, Kevin Kelly, Dominic Pusateri, Luke Evans, and Brady Rose scored the goals for the Indians, who were 6-2 overall nearing the halfway mark in the season.
