The association had a range of activities during 2012 including a water quality monitoring program, which began soon after the organization was founded in 1999. Four sites on Chartiers, Little Chartiers and Chartiers Run near the American Legion in Houston, are checked two times a year for specific chemical pollutants, such as sulfides, and for macroinvertebrates, the small creatures that indicate whether the water quality of the stream is good or poor.

The Canonsburg Lake Project, which will finance restoration of the upper portion of the lake, including dredging, was also an important project. The Save Canonsburg Lake Committee has been responsible for the fund-raising and planning for this project.

The group also took part in the state Department of Environmental Protection’s summer program as monitoring for bacteria by collecting water samples that were taken to be analyzed.
