Mt. Lebanon considers changing skateboard ordinance

Mt. Lebanon residents frustrated with the municipality’s ordinance that prohibits skateboarding may soon be able to ride their skateboards throughout Mt Lebanon. At the Feb. 12 meeting, commissioners discussed the possibility of changing the ordinance that bans skateboarding on Mt. Lebanon streets.
The current ordinance states that “no person shall ride a skateboard, coaster, skates or similar device upon any street,” and “No person shall ride a motorized scooter upon any sidewalk in the municipality.” The new ordinance being discussed would delete both provisions from the Mt. Lebanon Code.
A public hearing for the new ordinance is scheduled at the commission’s Feb. 25 meeting.
“We don’t allow skateboarding at all in our cultural business district and there isn’t any place you can skateboard,” municipal manager Stephen Feller said. “Very few citations have ever been written. Police typically warn people.”
Mt. Lebanon was considered as the location for Pitcher Park Memorial Skatepark last year, but the park is now being built in Carnegie.
Questions still remain about whether the new ordinance will extend to Mt. Lebanon school properties and parking garages.
According to commissioners, skateboarding will be prohibited in parking garages, and school properties can enforce their own skateboarding policies.
“But, Mt. Lebanon Police can’t give tickets on school property,” commissioner Dave Brumfield said.
