Before he became a United States Marine, Cpl. Doug Vitale was a wrestler. So it is fitting Peters Township will host a “Match For a Marine at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16. The Indians will wrestle Upper St. Clair.

“Our community always rallies,” said Mike Buckiso from the PT Big Red Wrestling Boosters.

While Vitale wrestled at Kiski Area, his wife, Alexis Abraham, is a PT alumna having graduated in 2004. The pair met while attending Slippery Rock University and married May 30, 2010. They moved to North Carolina in July 2011.

Shortly after, Vitale was deployed to Afghanistan. On Sept. 25, 2011, the dreaded call came.

While on patrol, Vitale, weighing 230 pounds and wearing some 100 pounds of gear, stepped on an improvised explosive device buried deep in the ground. In addition to blowing off both legs, the detonation caused a traumatic brain injury to Vitale.

Treated in Afghanistan, then flown to Germany, he arrived in Washington D.C. four days after the explosion.

A year after his injuries, Vitale, who suffered several strokes, has lost his ability to speak as well as his motor control. Through facial expressions, he is able to communicate.

According to Alexis, Vitale shows frustration, sadness and happiness. He knows what has happened, she says.

Though in Florida undergoing constant therapies, the Vitales are well aware of what is happening back home and the efforts of the community to support them.

Back in September, the VFW Post 764 sponsored a “Hero Walk” along Arrowhead Trail. The event raised $40,000 funds for the Vitale’s house fund.

Tunnel to Towers Foundation and The Gary Sinese Foundation are building a house for the couple in the community.

“Because this brave young soldier will need assistance for the rest of his life,” said Buckiso, “the home will accommodate all of his needs.”

Thus the wrestling association and community are continuing in their fund-raising efforts by hosting the special match.

“The goal is to have 1,000 people attend,” said Buckiso, “and to raise $5,000 for this amazing family.”

The Peters Township Dance Team, the school district, the VFW Post and the Pittsburgh Leather Neck Detachment have all rallied behind the event.

All proceeds from ticket sales, concessions and a 50/50 raffle will be donated to the fund to build the home in Peters Township.

Donations and financial contributions can also be sent to the VFW Post 764, 460 Valley Brook Rd., McMurray, 15317. Write Doug Vitale on the memo section of the check.
