A Peters Township High School senior is one of the winners of a $1,000 scholarship given by Giant Oaks Garden Club. Ava will major in environmental science at Baylor University. Other scholarship winners included: Elka Hoelsken, a graduate of Burgettstown High School, and an environmental science major at Penn State University’s main campus; David Murin, a graduate of Chartiers Valley High School who will major in biology education at Chatham University, received a $1,000 scholarship from Giant Oaks Garden Club member Dorothy Holden in memory of her mother, Adea Palombo, who valued education; John Kelly awarded a $1,500 scholarship in memory of his wife, Cheryl, a former GOGC member, to Charleroi High School graduate Katelyn Valla, who will major in environmental science at Hood College. All recipients have achieved outstanding academic achievements and have a strong conviction for community services as well as a confirmation of plans to improve the environment now and in the future.
